ABSTRACT

As we saw in the last chapter, the rate of growth of aggregate ASEAN exports to the EEC was much more impressive than that of the developing countries as a group over the years 1973/74 to 1978/79. While ASEAN exports to the EEC as a whole have not done significantly better than developing country exports since 1978/79, when they are broken down by commodity group, it is clear that both exports of non-oil raw materials and food and of manufactures have increased in volume terms 3 to 4 percent a year more rapidly than those of the developing countries as a whole. From Table 3.1 it is apparent that ASEAN has been increasing its share of the Community market as much in food and raw materials as in manufactures. Palm and coconut oil, oil cake, wood “in the rough”, coffee and processed foods have all made important contributions to the growth of exports of agricultural goods.
