ABSTRACT

The general conclusion drawn in the last chapter from the results of the analysis of the EEC GSP by broad commodity class was that the major impact of the scheme has come through the impetus it has given to exports of particular products from particular countries. But the analysis does not identify those products or countries. The percentage boost to exports calculated for each commodity group is an average which conceals a wide dispersion of trade expansion effects. To identify the products and countries where the export stimulus is likely to have brought about significant dynamic effects on the basis of these averages is, as has been seen, highly speculative. As a step towards a more micro-economic and so finer assessment of the impact of the GSP at the product or industry level, a number of products, all of importance to the ASEAN countries, has been selected for more detailed study. A list of these products and some basic information about them is given in Table 8.1.
