ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the issues of the International Standards Organization (ISO) quality standards and the software industry. Quality is being addressed in software development and there are efforts to put in place standards, best practices, and methodologies to assure that quality will be built into software in the early phases of the life cycle. In the United Kingdom there is a program that certifies the software companies; in the United States, the Software Quality System Registration (SQSR) is proposing a similar program. The elements of the SQSR program that are emphasized are the auditor requirements, training and certification, and the accredited registrar’s required use of certified auditors in any audits where the registration would cover the software scope. The software quality system registration program is intended to add value to the American National Standards Institute-Registrar Accreditation Board accreditation program as well as to the US registration system operating.
