ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the issues of the International Standards Organization quality standards and the environmental concerns as defined in British standards (BS) 7750 in 1992. There are at least three reasons for a company to decide to apply for BS 7750 certification: government regulations, market demand, and marketing advantage. The subject of costs in the BS 7750 is uniquely different from that of traditional quality costs, where all costs involved apply to the costs of the quality control system and to the real costs of poor work, rework, and scrap. The operations costs will be the annual costs of operating the environmental management system, including those of audits, upgrades, and annual recertification fees. The BS 7750 is under the direction of the Environment and Pollution Standards Policy Committee. It was developed in response to increasing concerns about environmental protection and performance.
