ABSTRACT

Data processing is essential in assisting the improvement effort. This chapter argues that the reader had some knowledge of computers and software programs. Relational databases are computer programs that allow the user to organize pieces of information into specific categories, similar to an address book that contains names, addresses, cities, states, zip codes, and phone numbers. Databases that have statistical functions are the most efficacious for the improvement process. Stand-alone, user-friendly programs can be created that allow non-computer-literate people to enter the data. Using a computer screen that looks like the data sheet is less likely to produce data entry errors than entering information in a monotonous grid such as a spreadsheet screen. Many reliable computer systems are available for around $1000.00 that will run current database and spreadsheet software. This should include at a minimum a dot matrix printer and a black and white video display monitor.
