ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emergence and growth of a low carbon economy, detailing the key economic, social and environmental drivers for its development. On June 5, 2008, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stated the theme of World Environment Day, Kick the habit: Towards a Low Carbon Economy. Today, the more progressive and visionary organizations have sought to combine quality, health and safety and EMSs into one integrated management system to create one coherent management system. Since widespread deployment of low carbon technologies is crucial to realizing the vision of a low carbon economy in Asia, innovative options should be considered such as: Also noteworthy is the preference in many cases to use cheaper second generation environmental technology, rather than expensive leading edge technology. The chapter concludes review of the growing complexities of environmental management in a low carbon economy and proposes solutions for organizations by way of knowledge networks and diffusion models to determine environmental management best practice.
