ABSTRACT

Cultural meanings of faith and fidelity figured prominently in the life history of 'Camila', an 86-year-old Latina widow admitted to the care facility over a decade ago. Camila's lived experiences are deeply rooted in Maternal dimensions of existence and her early life experiences in her native country with her mother, home, and in a family of cultural origin. Camila brings her past retentions of profound love from her mother, and faithful care in a welcoming home environment, to bear in her current horizons. Camila's move from her own home and dwelling to the care facility precipitates a number of shifts in attitude about the home. The constituents of desire and agency are central to understanding Camila's lived experiences at the end of life. Camila has an abiding faith in God that she feels is empowering, and a source of strength and enjoyment for her.
