ABSTRACT

I HAVE borrowed this title to designate time spent by the child between his leaving the entrants' class and entering the leavers' class. Thus, it covers the main portion of his life in the 'middle classes', especially if he is in a school where there are, as a rule, six-monthly promotions. It is, however, clear that if he is only in the entrants' class for six months and he came from a formal school, little must be expected of him, for far more work can be done, far more initiative looked for during the second six months than the first, when much time is taken in the actual process of settling down. He should still be considered during his second six months as an entrant. In either case, on removing to the new class he should be very different from the little child who came up from the infants' school or transition class.
