ABSTRACT

THROUGHOUT THIS book the aim of the writer has been, to suggest ways in which the formal school of the well-known type can be converted into the democratic school where both teachers and children alike are free to think for themselves and to work out their own salvation which, in the case of the children, is synonymous with their own education. Such a school gives scope to the individual to develop his powers and to find kindred spirits with whom he can work and play; gives him also a sense of security and the help he finds necessary, for his teachers are there for those purposes; gives him the opportunity of learning the arts and sciences necessary for full life in his community.
