ABSTRACT
Severe mental illness (SMI): refers to the presence of a severe psychiatric disorder (eg schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, severe depression or bipolar disorder) accompanied by significant functional impairment, disruption of normal life tasks, periods of hospitalization and need for psychotropic medication.
