ABSTRACT
A risk versus benefit analysis needs to be done when considering prescribing antipsychotics in pregnancy. Stopping the drug may lead to the mother experiencing a psychotic relapse necessitating use of higher doses of antipsychotics and increasing the risk of teratogenicity. Psychotropic drugs should be avoided if possible in the first trimester (when major organs are being formed).
