ABSTRACT

Amanda works as a designer at an architecture firm. She has been working nonstop lately on plans for a housing development. Most of this work has involved drawings of wood framing details. In the United States, the structure of most houses is composed of a frame made out of lumber. These pieces are referred to by their cross-sectional dimensions in inches – two by fours, two by sixes, two by twelves, etc. Amanda has been drawing assemblies of these elements over and over again for weeks and needs a break. She wants a game that would allow her to vent her frustration about this work in brief sessions throughout the day. Her idea is a design game in which she would get to throw these pieces of lumber around to express her frustration. She thinks this type of design game could help blow off steam and provide a new venue for some creative expression. Amanda feels like it may help her to assemble these standard components into novel forms that could reveal new creative possibilities.
