ABSTRACT

Adrian Hill claims to have coined the term ‘art therapy’ to describe his work (Art Versus Illness 1945). It seems appropriate, then, to begin with a discussion of his work, and also that of his contemporary, Marie Petrie, an art educator who emigrated to the USA in the early 1950s. In addition to Art Versus Illness, he wrote Painting Out Illness (1951) and two articles in Studio Magazine (1942 and 1947), gave radio broadcasts, and lectured throughout Britain and Holland. Hill was made President of BAAT in the few years before his death in his mid-80s.
