At the same time as Adrian Hill was attempting to set up art classes in sanatoriums and general hospitals, and Rita Simon had begun to work in Joshua Bierer’s social psychiatry clubs (1942 onwards), an experimental centre for psychotherapy through the arts was established in Devon, under the direction of Dr Irene Champernowne and her husband Gilbert.
