ABSTRACT

Dogs, horses, monkeys, and other animals each have a number of characteristic postures. Rhesus monkeys, for example, have five sitting positions – upright, relaxed, hunched, cat-like, and crouching. They have other postures for threat, sex, grooming, defecation, sleeping, and so on. And, as we have seen, posture plays an important role for many animals in signalling dominance, threat, submission, and other interpersonal attitudes. We shall see that very similar signals are used by man.
