ABSTRACT
The find ings so far repor ted have tended to omit refer ence to the subgroups of the strange situ ation clas si fic at ory system. None of the three major groups-A, B, and C-is large enough to support a discrim in ant func tion analysis for its compon ent subgroups. Within Sample 1, for which meas ures of infant and mater nal beha vior at home are avail able, the number of infants in each of the subgroups is too small to make it reas on able to expect signi fic ant differ ences among them. Therefore, it is diffi cult to assemble convin cing evid ence of the valid ity of the distinc tions between subgroups that are made by the clas si fic at ory system. This being so, the reader may wish to conclude that such distinc tions might well be ignored.
