The subjects come from white, middle class, Baltimore area famil ies, who were origin ally contac ted through pedi at ri cians in private pratice. They were observed in the strange situ ation at approx im ately 1 year of age. The total N of 106 infants is comprised of four samples that were observed in the course of four separ ate projects. (See Table 1.)
Sample 1 was observed in the course of a longit ud inal study of the devel op ment of infant-mother attach ment through out the first year. Twenty six infants were visited at home at inter vals of 3 weeks from 3 to 54 weeks of age. In lieu of or to supple ment the second tolast visit at 51 weeks, the babies were brought into the labor at ory for the strange situ ation. Three subjects were dropped from the
strange situ ation sample, the first because he was 64 weeks of age by the time the strange situ ation was devised, the other two because they were ill when brought to the strange situ ation.
