ABSTRACT

Between 2003 and 2005 each setting worked through a cyclical process of change, to audit their existing practice, identify areas of development, make changes and improvements, and then begin the process again by re-auditing their practice.Almost ten years later, in 2012, the project settings were invited to give an update for this second edition of CreatingA Space to Grow.Of the twentytwo settings originally involved, four are no longer registered as childcare providers. The remaining eighteen settings were contacted and of those eight responded. These eight settings were invited to provide an update on their current use of outdoors to identify whether the changes they made had been sustainable over time, and whether they had continued to improve their practice and meet the original aims of the project. The legacy of the Space to Grow project is the positive impact it continues to have on the settings involved.A member of staff at St Martin’s Preschool in Dover echoed the views of many practitioners when she summed up the outcomes of the project ‘it was the catalyst for everything we have done since’.The following case studies provide a snapshot of the current outdoor provision at the eight settings that were revisited.
