ABSTRACT

There are times in Chapter 22 when I refer, perhaps with a touch of irony, to academics building up their lists of publications and enlarging their CVs. It may create the impression in places that a successful academic career is based around simply churning out journal article after journal article, plus the occasional book. I am certain many academics would be only too happy if this were the case. However, those academics need to get the material for their papers from somewhere, and for better or for worse, in reality, much of their time will be spent filling out forms in order to apply for grants from various funding bodies. In this chapter I will go through the process of applying for research funding and make some suggestions that might improve your chances of success.
