What were the functions of the army on the frontier? Its main priority was to keep barbarians out of the Empire, but this activity only accounted for a small part of its time. Soldiers had many other activities while garrisoning the frontier. The relative importance of these duties changed over time, but there was never a time when the function of the army was simply to fight against barbarian enemies of the Empire. 154
