ABSTRACT
Pre-industrial Europe possessed a feudal social order where resources were employed according to tradition. Ownership of land was the key source of wealth; labour followed occupations determined by custom and social hierarchy. Neither land nor labour was marketed freely, though the product of these resources that was surplus to needs would have been.
