ABSTRACT

The decision m ade by Algerian nationalist leaders to achieve decolo nization through m ilitary means, thereby waging a w ar against the French governm ent, had a sim ilar impact on women and men as did the French invasion of Algeria by French troops in 1830. There is a striking sym m etry in the history of colonization and decolonization. Both events were brutal, m arked by massive uprooting of the rural population for better control, and resulted in changing the social landscape of Algeria after all arm s went silent.
