ABSTRACT

The New Age Movement is a strange potpourri of myths and rituals drawn from Asian religion, European legends, and the imaginations of its practitioners. Much of it claims to be science, history, or the arts, rather than religion, but at every turn an explorer of the New Age will confront supernatural forces. Many small New Age businesses have sprung up in the town, including two astrological services, namely Glastonbury Mythic System, and Natural Health Clinic. A rubric for categorizing the degree and form of organization of semi-religious phenomena was derived from the empirical study of the New Age itself. With the rough classificatory rubrics, and the theory of rewards and compensators, this chapter describes private, audience and client aspects of the New Age. This helps to understand the diffuse and changing cultural system that surrounds new religious movements and gives some promise of shaping the religious consciousness of the future.
