ABSTRACT
An examination of the controversy surrounding the sociology of knowledge in Weimar Germany implies not merely an extension of the discussion of the tradition behind it but also, in a sense, a summary of the issues it raised. The various debates also illustrate the extent to which the sociology of knowledge questioned and sometimes challenged the foundations of sociology itself. Many contemporaries were in no doubt that this branch of sociology raised issues that lay at the very roots of the social sciences themselves.
