This chapter treats the presentation in the Anatomy of the "displacement" and "condensation" of mythic and metaphoric elements of literature. I The starting point is Cassirer, whom, as has been seen, Frye both follows and departs from on the topic of myth. The influence of Freud, who uses the terms "displacement" and "condensation" in The Interpretation of Dreams, will be considered. Frye's initial discovery of the process the Anatomy designates as "displacement" seems to have occurred during the Cassirer review he wrote three years earlier.
