ABSTRACT

The world population continues to grow apace (6000 billion is forecast for the turn of the century). It includes high populations in Third World countries that are undernourished. Yet, in advanced countries, such as Europe and the USA, there is now a problem of surplus production. One of the most pressing problems facing society is how to feed a hungry world without causing permanent environmental damage by intensive farming methods unsuited to the area concerned. In order to achieve this it is necessary to improve our knowledge concerning crop distributions and crop yields.
