ABSTRACT

Participating in debate is a fine opportunity for pupils to experience the democratic process in action. Not only are moral and social issues researched, considered and expressed but the participants are also exposed to opinions and beliefs that are different from their own. Debate encourages participation, it hones reasoning and communication skills, and it mirrors parliamentary and democratic procedures. A useful resource for this chapter is The Sport of Debating: Winning skills and strategies by Phillips and Hooke.
