To most civilians the concept of the Reserves and the National Guard are more than likely interchangeable, so first I want to identify the mission of each and the differences between the two components of the military, both currently referred to as “suddenly military” and “citizen soldiers.” Although the National Guard is part of the Reserves forces, it is the oldest component of any uniformed services, tracing its roots back to 1636 with the earliest English colonies in North America (About the National Guard, n.d.).
