ABSTRACT

Not long after the reopening of the border, border tourism sprang up at different international border crossings in the northern part of Vietnam, including the Lai Cai-Hekou, Mong Cai-Dongxing and the Long Son-Youyiguan border crossings. Chinese tourists crossing the land borders to neighbouring countries form part of the bigger picture of the growth of the tourism craze (luyoure) in China, which has been accelerated by the increase in disposable income of the Chinese since the 1990s. Not only has domestic tourism received a big boom, but Chinese outbound tourism (COT) has also been growing tremendously.
