ABSTRACT
The first practicable electric light, a carbon arc, was demonstrated by Humphrey Davy in 1810. He and others throughout the nineteenth century also experimented with filament lamps, but it was not until the development by Joseph Swan in Great Britain and Thomas Edison in the USA of lamps with a reasonable lifetime and acceptable cost that, in the 1880s, widespread use of electric lighting became possible.
