ABSTRACT

Like many other abstract terms, ‘intentionality’ has very concrete roots in human activity. It is derived from the noun ‘intentio’ which, in turn, comes from the verb ‘intendere’. Originally this verb seems to have been connected with archery: it referred, among other things, to the activity of drawing a bow or directing it at a target. The interpretation of intentionality as directedness has some degree of etymological support.
