ABSTRACT

Franz Brentano can be called the first genuine phenomeno-logist. He planned to develop a scientific psychology that would be the counterpart of what was in his day an already well-developed natural science. According to Brentano, ‘All the data of our consciousness are divided into two great classes — the class of physical and the class of mental phenomena’ (PES 77), and, while natural science investigates physical phenomena, psychology was to investigate mental phenomena. Thus it was of utmost importance for the new science of psychology to delimit its object of study sharply from that of natural sciences.
