ABSTRACT
What does it mean to “understand a text?” One popular hypothesis (Schank & Abelson, 1977; Rumelhart, 1977a, 1977b) is that understanding a text involves the construction of some internal representation of the text which is consistent with the reader's world knowledge. The resulting representation may then be used to recall, summarize, or answer questions about the text.
