ABSTRACT
In 1790, the first US Census reported 3.9 million people (Table 2.1). The population increased 10 times during the next 80 years, reaching 39 million in 1870. Growth rates gradually decreased from about 30% a decade to about 20%. Yet with a larger base population, the resident population was 76 million in 1900.
