ABSTRACT

Stress is the rhythm of the language. In pronunciation, stress is the word, part of a word, or one word in a group of words that receives the most emphasis. This emphasis is the result of loudness, pitch, length of the syllable, or some combination of the three variables. Understanding and denoting stress appropriately is a difficult concept for most beginning phoneticians and individuals learning ESL. The complexibility of stress is directly related to the variability of pronunciation in the English language.
