ABSTRACT

Sentence stress refers to the most prominent words in a phrase or a sentence. Engnsh is a stress-timed language (see Fig. 10.1) with a predetermined rhythm. In other words, approximately every 0.6 seconds a stressed syllable must occur (Woods, 1992). These syllables may follow a variety of patterns that affect the length of the stressed and unstressed syllables, but the length of time required to pronounce the various sentences is the same. English is a stress-timed language (reproduced with permission of the Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, 1997, from Rhythm and Unstress; information from Public Service Commission of Canada). https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780203763599/1c8f8f61-48ca-4a82-8e25-1d3b9f8b47df/content/fig10_1_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
