ABSTRACT
The first part of the GAP studied in detail is the section on vowels. A clear understanding of the vowels is important because vowels are the nucleus of the syllable. Fifteen vowels are commonly used in American English. Of these 15 vowels, GAP uses 13. The other 2 (/a/ and /ɒ/) are used in the eastern dialect.
