ABSTRACT

In this Module you will find two very different examples of written versions of spoken French, Texte un, ‘La Famille en kit’, is a transcription of a radio programme in which journalists made comments about recordings of unscripted interviews with three different couples. As it was a radio programme, the listeners originally would not have had any visual clues. The journalist has, however, tried to recreate some of the liveliness and spontaneity of the real spoken language he has transcribed. The decision not to use punctuation makes the text hard to read, but accurately conveys the impression of flowing, continuous speech. To understand the text, you will have to try to work out where the pauses come and imagine the intonation.
