ABSTRACT

Managing mathematics manipulatives and their use can be a problem. As with other materials, clearly explain to students how you expect them to distribute, use, and collect the manipulatives, and be consistent in these expectations. Be sure to give students time to become familiar with new manipulatives before giving a specific assignment. Designate the areas where they are to be used and how many people can work together. You also may want to assign roles (e.g., Leader, Recorder, and Custodian) when students work in groups to ensure learning time goes smoothly and manipulatives are returned to their storage area.
