ABSTRACT

By administrators. Administrators like to complete two types of observations: formative and summative. A formative observation is typically a “walk-through” by an administrator. Good administrators get out of their office and walk through the building at least once a day, dropping in on a few classrooms. Many administrators practice what is known as a 5-by-5 rule: they walk through all classrooms in the building, but observe for 5 minutes only in 5 selected classrooms. During such observations, they may take notes on a handheld device.
