ABSTRACT

Having a student get up to sharpen a pencil during a lesson is annoying, especially when the trip to the sharpener has more to do with an “in-house field trip” than a dull pencil point (see Attention). You can have a rule of no pencil sharpening during lessons or, if you don’t mind movement while you are teaching, you can have a pencil exchange cup where an unsharpened pencil is exchanged for a sharpened one. At the end of each day, one student sharpens those in the cup so they are ready for the next day. For related information, also see Procedures Pave the Way and Student Jobs.
