ABSTRACT

Solving problems isn’t your job alone. Students can and need to learn how to seek positive resolutions to problems. Don’t expect that they already have the skills to do so, though. No matter what age your students are, start with basic skills in conflict resolution, guiding them and practicing techniques until they understand. Syllabus for problem solving 101

Identify the problem. Allow individuals involved to share their feelings and needs about the situation.

Brainstorm possible solutions to the problem.

Evaluate solutions individually using the question, “What would happen if?”

Select what is thought to be the best solution and try it.

Monitor that solution; continue using it or seek a new one.
