ABSTRACT

With the right questioning, you not only receive answers, but also engage learners and stimulate higher-order thinking. Furthermore, when students are focused on lessons, they are less likely to need management. Teachers’ questions done well are keys to good teaching. Additionally, when students ask the right questions, they learn how to become well-informed lifelong learners. Teacher-generated questions fall into four categories: managerial, rhetorical, closed, and open.

Managerial questions keep the lesson moving (e.g., “Is everybody focused on me?”).

Rhetorical questions reinforce an important idea or concept (e.g., “Thumbs-up or thumbs-down: Was slavery the only issue in the Civil War?”). Also see Student Reponses.

Closed questions check mastery (e.g., “How much is 8 × 7?”).

Open questions stimulate discussion (e.g., “Why do you think Alice went down the rabbit hole?”).
