ABSTRACT

Think carefully about the seating arrangement in your classroom, yet realize that whatever arrangement you set up must change occasionally throughout the year. When deciding on an arrangement, keep the following suggestions in mind:

Never place a victim next to a victimizer.

Seat ESOL students in the middle of the room so they can observe the actions of other students.

Place a new student next to a reliable student who can assist the new person.

Seat visual- and hearing-impaired students near the front of the classroom (unless hearing loss is directional).

Place disruptive students on your visually dominant side. For instance, when reading a book to the class, think about how you hold the book and the direction you look to see the pages. You need to be able to see these students while you read.

Avoid noisy areas. Loud AC units and windows near playgrounds often distract students.
