ABSTRACT

When children are at school, the school is responsible for their safety. To ensure a safe environment and preparedness for emergency situations, most schools have a policy and alert system for immediate lockdowns. Lockdown situations— where all students are brought into the classroom and the door is locked—include a stranger on campus or an abduction attempt by a noncustodial parent. Knowing the code and what you and the students must do during this alert is imperative. If your school does not have a specific policy in place, help get one implemented. Unexpected and emergency situations epitomize the extreme reasons for teachers to know where students are at all times.
