ABSTRACT

You can help students self-manage their participation in classroom instruction by teaching them appropriate behaviors, as outlined by SLANT. Developed by the College of Education at the University of Kansas, SLANT is a mnemonic representing these behavior strategies:

Sit up (without slouching).

Lean forward and listen.

Activate thinking.

Name key information (answer teacher’s questions, share ideas).

Track the teacher (follow the teacher rather than look around the room).

For effective use of SLANT, you must teach students the strategies and have them practice each prior to a lesson. When it comes time to SLANT, they will know what to do.
