ABSTRACT

Help your students be responsible in their use of social media by teaching them “electronic etiquette” and safety guidelines (see also Digital Citizenship). Though you are not responsible and cannot control students’ use of social media sites outside the classroom, you may be able to influence how they use these sites. If you hear of vicious texts or posts by or about your students, you certainly can discuss concerns with parents and administrators. If you use social media sites in classroom instruction, you can use the situation to not only explain school policy about usage, but also appropriate cyber behavior in and out of school. See Bullying and Cyberbullying for related material.
