ABSTRACT

… care for yourself. Seems obvious, doesn’t it? Yet burnout happens! (See Burnout.) The first year especially can be overwhelming. When you step into the classroom, you become a facilitator of learning even while you still are learning so much yourself. Though on-the-job training is inherent in any first-time position, your training is multi-faceted. You also are establishing competency and comfort levels with students, colleagues, parents, administrators, and curriculum. For these reasons, self-care is recommended to ensure a balanced lifestyle (Gorrow & Muller, 2008).
