ABSTRACT

“Shh.” Then the teacher adds a little longer “shhh.” When that doesn’t work, another four or five more are added. “Shh. Shh. Shh, shh.” It’s called the teapot syndrome—because the teacher sounds like a teapot! What’s more, “shh” is not an effective quieting technique. Said too many times, it simply becomes white noise, background that students do not notice. The Teacher Look and other strategies are more effective (see Whole Class Attention).
