ABSTRACT

Help students get the most they can from their textbooks; teach them about textbook format. Explain that bold words represent key items to know and that they usually are on chapter tests. Point out that the first sentence in each subheading generally highlights what the paragraph is about. This knowledge is not intuitive; help students learn to learn by pointing out contextual clues. As you teach, keep in mind that younger students must be taught how to use picture clues and older students must be taught how to take notes. Developing these skills is imperative because they are crucial to students’ ongoing academic success.
